UNCLUTTERED — Restful living room in Arden Drive home.

By OPAL CROCKETT

Times Homes Editor

HE old stayed but made made room for the new. A family on Arden Drive

wanted a change in furnishings. Members liked the dash and simplicity of modern, yet refused to part with their long-loved traditional furniture. The two were introduced and made friends. The 18th Century warm, dark mahogany tables, piano and other pieces owned by the family were combined with new light furnishings of in Sahara finish. Sahara, by Imperial Furniture Co.,is a creamy tone blending with all color schemes. u n o THE OUTCOME of this meeting of two periods is a modern provincial home, with the new furnishings by Adams & Co.

The interior, designe by Rhys T. Schmidt, Adams decorator, is subtle and inviting. Colors and textures are suggested by the brick and wood of the house. Walls, painted gray with an olive green overtone, are a perfect foil for cocoa, forest green and terra cotta used in the furnishings. The imported, hand-loomed carpeting laid wall-to-wall is forest green.

Aggressive Playing Pays Off

HERE was nothing timid about the bidding of this hand which was

played at the recent national tournament in Cincinnati. After North doubled the opening spade bid for a takeout, South had a bit of a problem.

He didn’t particularly relish the idea of jumping the bidding, especially since one of his three high cards (the king of spades) lay right under West's bid and might be completely worthless. On the other hand, he could dream up a number of combinations which North could hold and which would give him a good play for game, but on which North could not move over a minimum response of two hearts. ” ” ” HE THEREFORE made the gtrong bid of three hearts, with the somewhat consoling feeling that, since he had passed to start with, his partner could pass the three-heart bid, holding a shaded takeout double. North's" double was sound and, holding as many as four hearts, he went on to game. West opened the king of clubs and dummy's ace won. South cashed three high hearts ending in his. own hand. On the third heart, West flashed the nine of spades. Admittedly things didn’t look too promising, but South now led the deuce of spades and West went in with the queen,

” o 5 EAST SHOWED out on this trick, discarding a small diamond. West won a trick with the queen of clubs and .led a third club which was ruffed on the board. Things looked a little better

now, but South still wasn’t out of the woods. He had to get to his hand to lead toward the jack of spades again. Suppose he led to his ace of diamonds and returned a small spade. West could win with the ace and now if he had a fourth club, he could lead and that would take South's last trump. A low spade could be led to the lone jack, but there will be no way to get back to cash the king. So, after ruffing the third lead of clubs in dummy. South led a small diamond and hooked the 10. When this held he was home, having to concede a trick only to the ace of spades.

QUESTION: Do flies carry polio? ANSWER: The ‘virus of polio has been found in flies, but most people believe that the disease is spread more often by direct contact than by these pesky insects. i a a QUESTION: Since I stopped nursing my baby three years ago, one breast has been painful. Could it be possible that there is still milk in that breast after three years? ANSWER: It is possible, though if there were milk stil present, it could probably be expressed from the nipple.
