TV and Radio—

Maureen Flies Back For 15-Second Job

MAUREEN CANNON is

with her 13-second weekly TV appearances. From wherever she may be, each Sunday the pint-

size vocalist races into New mercial, then goes on her way. Her television: career started when she was signed as vocalist with the Paul Whiteman Sunday night TV show. Her chores included the 15-second commercial. When the sponsor replaced Whiteman and company with a dramatic offering, Maureen and her commercial were signed to stay on the air, Maureen couldn't find other television work:in New York, so she took to the night club circuit, playing club engagements across the country. Still eager to keep before the public eye, Maureen decided to hang onto the 15-second spot, regardless of inconvenience. That's why.when 8 p. m. rolls around on Sunday, you'll find her in the New York studios on the TV Playhouse (Ch, 10; 8 p. m.), no matter whether she's currently appearing in Miami Beach or Walla Walla, Wash.

u on » FICKLE FATE . Kukla, Fran and Ollie, the kiddie show which has been bumped from one end of the TV schedule to t'other, will take still another set-back when it starts a new season next Sunday. The TV rage back in the precoaxial days, the puppets (plus Fran Alilson) started out on a half-hour daily schedule. The show then was reduced to 15 minutes daily, Now, it's down to a half-hour weekly, n n » TALLULAH BANKHEAD thought she was setting some gort of precedent when she became emcee of the hour and a half “Big Show” two years ago. Arthur Godfrey thought he was the radio marathon champ with his myriad daily shows. Rut, take a look at Eddie Gallaher, who plays emcee 212 hours every Sunday afternoon on the aptly titled “On a Sunday Afternoon” show (WFBM, 1:30 p. m.). He's not the least discouraged when the rest of the cast is changed every half-hour, but just keeps plodding along as host on the musical matinee.

Fddie launched into his radio career while he was attending college in Tulsa, Okla. After a tour of duty as announcer with several stations in the. Midwest, and. a hitch in the Navy, he" settled dovm in Washington, D. C.,* to take over disc jockey chores which ‘had been vacated by Arthur Godfrey. There, he created a name for himself as an authority on popular music by pre-guessing the pub-

lic's tastes. This led to his present’

network job as commentator on the long show. ” n n HAPPIEST MAN on the West (Cnast when the TV version of “Our Miss Brooks” comes on this fall, will be Major G. R. Conklin, principal of an Elsinore, Cal., prep school. Seems his student body takes delight in comparing him to the ill-tempered, ~ dull - witted Frof.| Conklin on the TV show. Major Conklin wants his students to be able to see that he and the video show Conklin are ‘two completely different people.” " Ed 2 CLEAN LIVING TV sportscaster is taking lessons in how to smoke a cigar. The sportster never had been near a stogie until a cigar manufacturer bought up his show. Now he has to strain his box scores through a Havana; handrolled.
