Making for West

PARIS, . sounded for a new Moscow-dirécted anti-American, anti-
Aug.
NATO campaign.
The Kremlin appears to see in current squabbles among
members of the Western camition - like the French-American oll shore procurements dispute-- and increasing French governmental difficulty the signal to get going on ONE: Driving a wedge between Britain and America with subsequent Russian-British rapprochement. Andrei Gromyko, now In stalled in the London embassy, is
expected to “improve” the British grudge against the United States, TWO: The winnig over of the masses and political leaders alike to a policy conforming with Mos cow desires through Frances powerful Communist Party, This second Red objective began to take shape the end of May
after the Communists had failed to arouse Parisians against Gen Ridgway. The party assumed the pose of a truly nationalistic party with tears in its eyes for the French government and fellow Frenchmen It wept over the fact that American funds get scarcer daily; that the price of wheat stayed =o low; that well-deserving Premier Pinay had been unable to get back the capitalist money.
Stress ‘Co-operation’ For two mont hz practically every editorial in French Communist newspapers has been devoted to party offers to co-operate with other parties in helping solve France's difficulties, The Commies here have: ONE: Publicly admitted the fatlure of the strikes called to protest the arrival of Gen. Ridgway. TWO: “Regretted” the mistake they made in asking workers to lay down their teels for a purely “political motive” implying that non-Communist unions had been right in keeping their members from joining strikers. THREE: Made numerous offers to the Socialist “Workers
Strength” union and the Catholic |
“Christian Workers” union to join hands with them for a common fight “to improve workers’ conditions.” FOUR: Courted the Catholic Church; particularly workin g class missions organized French priests three years ago apparently on Vatican orders. FIVE: Almost dropped attacks

In other words, Moscow is now
about ready to make a strong
