McCarthy Foe Ends 25-Hour Talkathon' |

MADISON, Wis, Aug. 14 (UP) + Leonard Schmitt, seeking to win Wisconsin's Republican senatorial nomination from Sen. Joseph McCarthy, finished a 25-hour political “talkathon” still in good voice last night. The Merrill, Wis., attorney, his hair awry and his shirt unbottoned to the second button, answered questions at the rate of one-a-minute until 8:48 p, m. when he gave a 12-minute summary of his stand on Sen. McCarthy's charges of communism in government and his own political posi-

tion. Mr. Schmitt used the closing - minutes of the. ‘“talkathon” to

deny that he had ever indorsed! any Democratic candidates for| office, as charged by other Republicans.

Quests Phoned In An estimated 400 persons were in the Madison lodge hall where Mr. Schmitt had sat since 8 p. m. | Tuesday answering all questions ~—from the audience and tele-| phoned into a battery of operators by radio listeners. | At the end of the grind, he assured reporters that he felt “fine.” The campaign fund drive in conjunction with the question and | answer program drew £1492 cash and $200 “more in pledges, program officials said. While Mr. Schmitt plowed through the deluge of questions, his opponent and the subject of! most of the queries, rested at a northern Wisconsin resort.
