| Hvasta Had Good Chance For Freedom

MUNICH, Germany, Aug. 14 (UP)-—American consulate employee John Hvasta was with two capable men and had plentv of food after his escape from a Communist prison in Czechoslovakia, Radio Free Europe said today. RFE officials said most of their information came from Czech refugee Jarosldv Bures, whose story about his escape with Mr. Hvasta has been carefully checked. Mr, Bures is now living here. ’ Mr. Hvasta, 25-year-old naturalized American student and U. 8. consulate employee in his native Czechoslovakia, was sentenced nearly four years ago to 10 years imprisonment on espionage charges, The Czech government announced officially recently that he had escaped from prison. RFE officials said the best available information was that the Hillside, N. J., student actual-

ly did make a break from the!

prison near Bratislava on Jan, 2

Whereabouts Now Unknown

The group split and Mr. Hvasta | with two others, may have headed |

toward the high Tatra Mountains. they said. They had no informa-

tion about his present whereabouts. It ‘is about 40 miles from

Bratislava, provincial capital of Slovakia near the border of the Soviet zone of Austria, to Vienna, territory controlled by Western powers. : Mr. Bures said Mr. Hvasta seemed physically weak but was traveling with two experienced men. One of them was a former Czech army lieutenant and the other a member of the SNR (security service) who was thorough} ly familiar with the area. “While all three were Wearing] prison uniforms, they weré -not noticeably conspicuous. The cut and color were similar to clothes worn by civilians in that part of the country,” the radio said. “All three were well supplied with food, including sugar, cocoa, coffee, canned meat and candy from Mr. Hvasta’'s CARE packages,” RFE said. RFE said Mr. Bures reported the prisoners were separated shortly after their escape at the small village of St. Peter near the prison. That was the last time Mr. Bures, saw Mr. Hvasta, ~‘In Bures’ opinion,” RFE said, “Hvasta was not captured in the Peer that nightd since they remained in the vicinity of the town tintil 10 p. m. and would have undoubtedly heard the commotion.”

Favorite of Prisoners

RFE said it learned from Mr. Bures that “Hvasta was well treated in Leopoldov prison before his escape. “Hvasta worked in the prison office and seemed to he a general favorite with the guards. They eamuggled tobacco and cigarets to him. They did not force him to have his head shaved and he was issued a better quality uniform than most of the other prisoners. | “Hvasta was also popular with the other prisoners . . . perhaps because he was extremely gen-

erous about sharing Care pack-§

ages he received from abroad.” |

RFE said it learned from Bures ||}

“Hvasta finally fell out of favor with the guards and was transferred from office work to hard labor. This labor detail which consisted of removing earth sis actually presented the American with his chance to escape. “He was approached by one of

five other prisoners in the escape |

plot and told about the bricked

up firing emplacement which they Ji

had discovered near their work. After removing the bricks from this emplacement the six passed through the opening to freedom.”
