Drought Hit Corn Hard
Times Special LAFAYETTE, Aug. 14--Indi-ana farmers lost about 23 million bushels of corn because of drought conditions, Purdue University agricultural statisticians estimated today.
They said corn yield Rospesls declined five bushels per acre during a dry spell in July. Nonetheless, the indicated production of 225,449,000 bushels will be about | 105 per cent of a 10-year average. | Estimated production of corn, goybeans, winter wheat and oats all will be above average, a monthly crop report said, but pro-| duction of rye and barley below average. In comparison to 1951 produc | tion, the total amount of corn, soybeans and oats is expected to decrease, while winter wheat, rye| and barley increase. A prospective yield of 24.5 bushels per acre of winter wheat indi-| cates a production 168 per cent of | last year and 132 per cent of average, the report said. This yield] was exceeded only in 1931. | Taking into account drought conditions, the report listed indicated production of major | Hoosier crops as compared to] previous years:
