By United Press DETROIT, Aug. 13< The fivepound son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry P. Perry, survivor of a rare, dangerous abdominal pregnancy which occurs only once in 18,000 births, today was given a 50-50 chance to live. The 26-year-old mother was reported doing ‘“fine.” The child, her first, was in “fair” condition in an incubator. He was delivered by abdominal surgery. The attending physician at Harper Hospital, who asked that his name not be used, said an abdominal pregnancy is fatal to the child 85 per cent of the time and also is “extremely dangerous” for the mother, The physician said that in such a pregnancy, the fertilized egg is

in some unexplained manner and the embryo develops outside the uterus. In the physicians words, the embryo “just rattles around loose" in the abdomen but continues to be nourished through the umbical cord. Without the protection of the womb the unborn child is subjected to “tremendous pressures,” he said. He said such cases cannot be diagnosed accurately until the fourth or fifth month of pregnancy. At that time a decision must be made as to whether the mother can risk carrying the child for the full nine-month term. If not, an operation, usually fatal to the child, must be per-
