"You Could Have Made It,

Is Lament of Mr. Heinsite

’* OU COULD have made it,” said Mr. Heinsite automatically, after Mr. Abel went ‘down one at his six club contract. Here's the way went. A dia- - mond was # opened and @ Mr. Abel won # with dummy’s ~ ace and dis- / carded a small . spade from his % hand. He then 7 ruffed the © eight of dia- ~~ monds, cashed §' the ace of & clubs-and led . 4 a small club Mr. Heinsite % to dummy’s queen. : A He figured if the hearts broke well, he could get rid of two more spades and thus avoid the spade finesse—which # would probably lose.

2 # = AT TRICK FIVE he led a

® small heart from the board, ® Mr. Heinsite ducked and the queen won. A heart was returned and the ten finessed. i Mr. Heinsite won with the jack and led a high diamond. Mr. Abel discarded a second spade and ruffed with dummy’s last trump. However, Mr. Heinsite still ‘had two heart stoppers while there was only one entry remaining on the board.

Mr. Abel therefore had to resort to the spade finesse and when that lost, he was set.

When you are in the happy position of being able to take a sluff from the closed hand at trick one, it is not always clear just what your best discard is. That was the case in today’s hand. Mr. Abel would have done bYetter to defer his decision concerning what card to play on the ace of diamonds.

diamonds. Thus there are no heart losers and only a spade trick need be conceded. If Mr. Heinsite goes in with the ace of hearts, both king and queen of hearts will take a trick. With two entries on the board even after Mr. Heinsite knocks out the ace of diamonds, dummy’s fifth heart can be set.

In this case, Mr. Abel discards

one spade on the king of hearts, one on the fifth heart and one on the ace of diamonds to make his contract.
