Jack Can Say ‘Yes, Sir’ In Five Languages
JACK VOOGD (pronounced Fokt) is a copy boy at The Indianapolis Times who has served in. three
armies, speaks five languages and hitch-hiked through most of Europe before coming here last May. He was born in Enschede, Netherlands. The tall, blond, blue-eyed Dutchman has been a copy boy and staff reporter on newspapers in Holland and has done freeJance writing for other papers. His ambition is to combine reporting with seeing the world. “I wanted to come to America because this is where things are happening,” Jack said In his softly accented voice. “And 1 want to be on the spot where things are going on. All the eyes of the world are fixed on this country. Jack is the nephew of Mr, and Mrs. William Lasonder, 1242 College Ave. It was through their efforts he got permission to make the journey here. Before he starts doing much writing and having by-lines In. the paper Jack wants to have his name changed. He feels it is too hard to pronounce and people will not remember it well enough.

“MY COUSIN (Jack Lasonder) e 1s studying law at the Indiana *
T.aw School,” he sald. “One of his first jobs when he graduates this year will be to have my name e¢hanged to Lasonder. It is. my mother’s name and is much easier to spell.” After the liberation of Holland fn May, 1945, Jack became one of 1000 Dutch interpreters to be - assigned to duty with the British and American armies. He was
attached first to the British In-
telligence Service. After taking his discharge from

” » » TWO “WEEKS after starting this job he was assigned to cover a sports carnival which was attended by Prince Bernhard, husband of Queen Juliana. The editor was so pleased with the way Jack covered the story he msde a full-time reporter of him.
