It's a Different City at Night
LONELY STREET—At 3 a. m. an occasional pedestrian finds his way along W. Ohio St. be-
tween lllinois and Meridian Sts. By LLOYD B. WALTON AS THE NIGHT goes on, one by one the lights go out in Indianapolis—but never all of them. All night some yellow bulbs burn, lighting scenes the city would be ashamed of in daylight, At night, few know what happens, fewer care. But in the wee hours all the hustle and In its place remains a weird stillness — broken occasionally by the shrill scream of a siren, a raucous cuss word from a drunken passerby berating his partner or a softly whispered proposition from a shadowy figure appearing out of nowhere. A curious visitor strolling on Illinois St. from Union Station has the feeling he walks in a ghost city. The nearly full moon floating In a cloudless sky sheds an eerie light in the deep shadows and adds to the illusion. oe < oe SUDDENLY a wisp of wind blows a tattered magazine cover into his path. The scantily clad pinup model in the picture seems symbolic of the atmosphere surrounding the lone pedestrian. Across the street a wobbly street-walker and her equally tipsy escort made their way through the door of a shabby flop-house. Behind them skulks another “woman of the streets” looking for a victim of her wiles. As the man crosses the street the night stillness is broken .by the clackety-clack of a street car returning to the barn. His foot trips slightly on & beer can mashed into the street car rail—
the last drops of its liquid contents spilling across the pavement. From the open door of a small restaurant the passerby’s nostrils catch many odors of cooking food. A scratchy juke box plays its part in the picture. A stealthy figure sidles from a dark doorway to fall into step with the visitor. “Can I get you a girl tonight?” he wheezes. After several suggestive and obscene propositions he draws back into the shadows to stalk another “prospect.” oa ob

pulls up sharply at the Terminal Station shed. There is a small flurry of excitement as a few nightowls watch attendants care for a wino. oS oo

friend saunter past. The girl casts furtive glances over her shoulder until they reach a small hotel. Block after block the visitor is approached with propositions for “fun.” Only with dawn does this segment of Indianapolis close its eyes.
