Sweater Girl Fashion Outmoded for '52
By GAY PAULEY
United Press Staff Correspondent NEY YORK, Aug. 9— The Sweater. Girl will have to find another fashion. Sweaters as Lana Turner made them famous are becoming outmoded, leading manufacturers report. This fall, they're more like blouses, designed to merge with the whole outfit. “The sweater as we used to know {it is dying,” said Mrs. Ruth Carter, designer for Ros-
ana knitwear. “Sweater fashions are not. We have the sweater look In blouses, suits and dresses.”
The sweater blouses promise to be the biggest seller come fall.
“A year ago we could hardly be bothered with 'em,” said a spokesman for Bernhard-Alt-
mann. “Now business couldn’t be better,” » " o MANUFACTURERS are showing the blouses as cardlgan or pullover style, plain or pleated, in solid colors or stripes, with simple sleeves, or with the loose-fitting bat-wing or dolman. Some designers are showing sweaters as parts of costumes, with co]lars or belts to match the skirts and jackets. The sweater look even carries to fur. The House of Aronowicz combines blond otter with white wool ribbing in a luxurious cardigan. “Don’t get the idea sweaters are getting shapeless,” said one manufacturer. “The sloppy Joe 1s dead as King Henry. Sweatens still look feminine.” uo o ~
ALL-OVER pleating is the idea of Rosanna knits. The pleating is knife-llike and permanent. The same house
features sweater blouses with
bold stripes of green, brown, red, and gray white background. Even the .simpliest cardigan is given a dressmaker touch. One has white piping at the sleeves and a small white collar. Others have hand-faggoting at the neckline. Pringle Johnston dresses up a turtle-neck pullover of navy wool with insets of white at the collar and cuff line.

Only one manufacturer disputed the disappearance of the figure-revealing sweater. “We're selling more small sizes than we ever did” sald John Elsdon, a vice president at Pringle Johnston,
