Record Review—

Music to Enliven Dull August Days

A VERITABLE SHOWER of fine music. has fallen from Columbia's long:playing record presses to refresh the ears of Hoosier classical music devotees during these

parched days of August.

Four of them are 12-inch LP’s as follows: noted Negro baritone, singing “Ancient Music of the Church” and “Ballads by Karl Loewe” (ML-4545); the Cleveland Orchestra under George Szell playing Dvorak's “New World Symphony” (ML-4534); and Joseph Szigeti, violinist, accompanied by the London Philharmonic Orchestra under 8ir Thomas Beecham, playing Prokofiev's “Concerto No. 1” and Mozart's “Concerto No. 4” (ML-4533).

The five other records in this Bernstein's “Fancy Free.” Columbia August release are 10- of these are among the most popAlexander Hilsberg/ular items in the modern ballet conducting the Philadelphia Or- repertoire, and the dances are chestra “Pops” in Willlam Wal- among the mos lively, stimulatton’s “Dances From Facade” and Ing pieces ot music in them.

Spent the other afternoon with a friend who was busily engaged in drilling holes in the base of’ his basement walls. I'll admit that this character does some pretty strange things from time to time but in this case he ‘was using his head. Seems that cracks had developed in the concrete block wall and at one point the wall had begun to buckle. Our friend figured that the trouble was caused by the pressure of the water on the other side of the wall and he was quite correct. As soon as he got a hole drilled through the wall, water poured through and there was plenty of water, He had made provisions for this with a drain line through the opposite wall and this line ran to a dry well.
