Powdered Comic Book Brings Dope Alert Here

Federal customs officers) throughout the country have been alerted for rolled newspaper and magazine shipment which ~may contain dope, a customs official said here today. Eugene OKon, assistant customs collector for IndMna, said powdered narcotics hidden in the folds of papers and magazines have been found by officers in other ‘parts of the country, especially on the Pacific Coast. In the local office recently inspectors found a white powder, first thought to be a narcotic, secreted between the pages of a comic book.

Old Men to Him CLEVELAND (UP) — A 19-year-old veteran of the Korean War at the Veterans’ Administration here asked for some information. Asked by counselor Robert E. Parrish where he had obtained some advice, the youth replied he got it from “one of those old World War II veterans.”

Laboratory tests showed, however, the powder was sodium sulphate, indicating a dope peddler may have been making a ‘“‘test run” to determine whether narcotics would the customs oflice here. Mr. Okon said the Indianapolis oftice does not have enough evidence to take action against anyone for attempted evasion of customs laws.
