Mr. Champion

To Use His Timing Sense

ORRECT timing is essential to the making of a large percentage of contracts. Mr. Champion made three no trump in today’s deal by a rather sensational play. With the same cards and the same opening lead, Mr. Muzzy would have timed the play differently and gone set. Mr. Abel opened the seven of spades, the trey went on from dummy and Mr. , Meek played Mr. Champion the jack. Here Mr. Champion hesitated and after a few moments Mr. Muzzy, who was sitting behind him, shrugged for the benefit of the other kibitzers, as if to say, “I don’t know what he’s waiting for. He's only got one play. ” » ~ YES, MR. MUZZY would have won with the queen, gloating over the fact that the lead had given him two tricks in spades whereas he could have got only one playing the suit himself. But since he had to knock out both red aces to make nine tricks, Mr. Abel's spades would have been set up in time to defeat the contract. Mr. Champion had other ideas about the timing of the hand. He let the jack of spades hold Trick 1. Mr. Meek returned the deuce of hearts which was as good as he could do, and Mr. Abel won with the ace. At this point Mr. Champion had

a o n MR. ABEL saw it was useless to return a spade and, if he had, Mr. Champion would have let it ride to his queen and made four no trump. Actually, Mr. Abel led back a heart and after winning with dummy’s king, Mr. Champion knocked out the ace of diamonds. He then controlled any return and had a sure nine tricks, with one spade, two hearts, two diamonds and four clubs. Mr. Muzzy would have made one more spade trick than Mr, Champion did. But his total number of tricks would have been somewhat deficient. And, as Mr. Champion pointed out,

it's the total that counts on |

the score.

| fl { | At camp this summer we have all enjoyed :playing {tether ball, and you boys and girls might enjoy this, too. You will need a pole or pipe 10 or 12 feet long and a rope to tie at the top end, such as a short section of clothesline. If you have a wooden pole, this rope ean be tied securely to a large nail driven into the top. Set the pole about 30 inches in the ground, and tamp it firmly so it will not wobble about. Now, tie a sock, with a tennis ball in the ‘toe, to the loose end of the rope so that the ball in the sock .swings about shoulder height. Take two plywood paddles, as shown, adding wrist loops of cord. One player hits the ball around the pole and his opponent attempts to bat it in the opposite direction.
