Mr. Unbelievable (Paige) Hurls Longest '52 Shutout
Blanks Tigers in
12 Innings;

By CARL L United Press Sperts Writer tify itself again with the name
IF ANYBODY FINDS an unidentified right or left arm of “Olympians,” but none of the laying around in the next two weeks, please check with original Kentuckians figure in the Dodgers or Giants—it probably will belong to one of Although Wah-Wah Jones says
their pitchers.
Both teams got a rain-out rest:
yesterday after that 35-hour 15inning marathon the Giants won early Wednesday morning, 7 to 6, § and, brother, did g they need it. For beginning _ today with a day | and night 2-ad- | mission double- § header at the Polo Grounds that should cover a span of at least 10 hours, there is a grind ahead that will make a lot of the players wish they had decided to be soda-dis-pensers, floorwalkers, or theaterushers. The Dodgers must go to Philadelphia tomorrow for six games in four days with the hot Phillies. The Giants, in turn, goto Bos: ton for four games in three days with the Braves. After that there still will be no rest for the weary. There will pe a 3-game Dodger-Giant series on ‘Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at Ebbets Field. Then the Phillies move in on the Brooks for three more games over the week end while the Giants go to Boston for six games in four days which means Friday and Sunday doubleheaders.

Nei Satchel Paige
n n ” WHILE the inter-borough battlers called off their feud yesterday after one inning because of rain, with the Dodgers in front, 1—to—0,—there-was plenty of excitement elsewhere on the major league front. Old Mr. Unbelievable himself, Satchel Paige pitched a 12-in-ning, 1 to 0 shutout for the Browns over the Tigers, in the longest shutout game of the major league season. That didn’t matter much in the standings because the seventhplace Browns were beating the last-place Detroiters. But at the nother end of the axis, the Indians picked up a full game on the Yankees and trailed them by only three, when they defeated the White Sox, 6 to. 1, after which Washington trimmed New York. 8 to 4. The Red Sox were rained out at Philadelphia.
” ” ”
IN THE National League, the
Pirates officially proved what |
everybody had known for months
—that they wouldn't win the |
pennant. They were eliminated mathematically at one of the earliest dates in league records, when the Cardinals trimmed them twice, 7 to 2 in 10 innings, and 3 to 2,
The Cubs defeated the Reds,|| p.m. on Saturday or ........a. m., p. m. on weekdays.
5 to 3, as New Manager Rogers Hornsby found out it was just as easy to blow games in Cincinnati as with the St. Louis Browns. The Phils and Braves were rained out of a night double-
header, along with the Dodger- |
Giant single game. Paige won his blank-blank duel with Virgil Trucks and Hal White when Bob Nieman hit a pop-single with the bases loaded in the 12th. He gave up seven hits in gaining his eighth victory. Paige survived a bases-loaded none-out jam in the 10th when two runners were forced at the plate and he struck out Connie Berry to retire the side. It was the first Brownie shutout since Apr. 23. = on 2 A RARE error by Phil Rizzuto let in two unearned runs for the Senators in the seventh and Walt Masterson went on to pitch a 6hitter, striking out 11 batters. Washington made only six hits but cashed in on the error. Early Wynn held the White Sox to five hits to gain his 13th victory and Larry Doby took over the American League lead in homers with 24 and in runs batted in’ with 78. His 9.run round-tripper was the big Cleveland blow.
” » n THE REDS suffered their first loss under Hornsby _when the Ciibs came from behind to score three runs in the sixth on” Bill Serena's double, Roy Smalley’s single, reliever Turk Lown'’s triple, and a single by Bob Addis. Lown, who pitched 6-hit relief ball for 82; innings after starter Paul Minner yielded two first inning runs, gained his fourth triumph. Dee Fondy homered for Chicago. The Cardinals won the 10inning opener from the Pirates when they scored five runs, two each on singles hy Hal Rice and Dick Sisler. In the second game Cloyd Boyer pitched 2-hit ball for seven innings until Pittsburgh picked up its only runs in the eighth and ninth.
Twink Star Due Back
In Lineup Tonight HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 7 (UP)— Carlos Bernier, heavy-hitting outfielder for the Hollywood Stars, might throw off the effects’ of a pulléd leg muscle by tonight in time to help the Twinks out of their slump, Manager Fred Haney said today. Bernier's batting average for the season is .302. His record in 122 games is 138 hits in 457 times at bat. He has belted 17 doubles, seven triples and six home runs. He also has stolen 53 bases.
