When Timing the Hand
R. MUZZY overlooked a little gimmick in the art’ of timing a hand—and lost his
- easily makeable slam. ‘At first
glance it appears that he handled things normally enough. He won the opening lead of the queen of clubs with the king and
led a club to his ace. When that held, he reasoned that he had only to ruff two clubs in dummy and then he might - even make seven if the jack of hearts dropped. .
At trick three he led a small club and ruffed in dummy with the .nine of hearts. * Mr. Dale overruffed with the jack and promptly led a trump. With no more trumps on the board, Mr. Muzzy had to do something about his last losing club, so he came to his hand with the ace of spades, picked up the remaining outstanding trumps, then led his last spade and finessed the jack. Mr. Dale won the setting trick. " » os MR. MUZZY complained about his bad luck in finding Mr. Dale with both“a doubleton club and the jack of hearts. But a close inspection shows his play was all wrong—and he should have known it was wrong. Let's go back to the point where the ace of clubs won the
