Plainfield’s’ Busy Taxi Lady’ Finally Gets a Vacation
By QPAL CROCKETT HE woman Plainfield said couldn't take a vacation
is back from one.
“You just can't leave,” Plainfield told Mrs. Thomas Turner, the “Taxi Lady,” when she talked about Tampa,
la “What will we do without vou?" they asked the operator of Plajnfield’s only taxi servjce. ‘It's Mrs, Turner housewives count on to take them to the launderette and the grocery, while husbands use the
car. u - -
SHE takes Plainfield women to the beauty shop. She makes bank deposits for those unable to leave home. She's on hand for "all “kinds of emergencies such as helping passengers take ciothes off the line when rain starts. Mrs. Turner works hand- inwing with the stork, rushing scores of mothers to Indianapolis hospitals. 8he sat with a nervous father, parked between two small children in the hospital waiting room while a third child was arriving. Mrs. Turner took one passenger home for three days. A mother en route to the maternity ward in Mrs. Turner's cab worried about who would take .care of. her little girl. The “Tax! Lady” took the child home with her. ” ” . DURING SCHOOL months Mrs. Turnér takes children and teachers to and from classes. At Christmas and Easter, stockings and baskets are filled by the “Taxi Lady.” In bad weather in, winter Mrs. Turner carries a basket of cinders and foxhole shovel and “starts out car drivers.”
” ” ” WHEN PLAINFIELD told Mrs. Turner she couldn't leave ghe complained “my life is worse than a doctor's.” She pleaded: “Any kind of business closes up sometimes. After driving a cab 24 hours a day for three years I need two weeks' vacation.” She closed up the ranch home she helped build a half mile south of Plainfleld, and to Tampa she went, taking to beaches instead of the wheel. Mrs. Turner is back home again with that family she's “mighty proud of.” With her in the white house are daughters, Marlene, 16, and Marilyn, 15. Back of them in a cute little house rebuilt from a three-car garage lives the third daughter, Mrs. Patricia Rogers,

Mrs. Turner, a native of Indianapolis, spotted the 10 acres near Plainfield, and she and her husband bought (it. They cut down the briars and bushes that grew head-high, and built the house amid maple, beech and apple trees. Mrs. Turner did the plastering and some carpentry jobs. The living room fronts the house and {s decorated in green and white with pink walls, On the floor of the comfortable home {8 a rag rug. Old-time

brass lamps with green parchment shades burn far into the night while Mrs. Turner awaits her cab calls.
Soon the - Turners started worrying about daughter Pat, a former mode] in Indianapolis, and her family living in a crammed city apartment.: Mr. Turner said to son-in-law Bob, “We'll make a house out of the garage,” and they did. About the only time the four are - separated is during the “Taxi Lady's” trips to town. Mrs. Turner takes leave then, remembering being stranded when she arrived in Plainfield before there was taxi service.
It was that night the idea of Plainfield Taxi Co. was born.

Mr. and Mrs.
By GAY PAULEY United Press Staff Correspondent
NEW YORK, Aug. 2— A man no longer 1s supposed to plunk himself
down comfortably in just any chair in the living room. He's supposed to pick one designed just for him, and let the missus do likewise, “Mr. and Mrs.” chairs, in both modern and traditional desi so they'll fit in any decorati scheme, were featured by Chairs, Inc.,, at the centennial exhibition of the Upholstered Furniture Manufacturers’ Association.
” ” » THE “MR.” chair is approximately one inch deeper and wider through the seat than the one for the woman.

Now to Have Own Chairs
“They're 80 designed that at’ first glance they look the same size,” said the designer, Allan Strauss. : Mr. Strauss said the idea of the larger chair for the man did not necessarily mean that the man took up more seating area. “Fat women take up space too,” he said wryly. o - .
“A MAN needs more room because he's just naturally a slumper. Women aren't. Psychologically, they like to sit up in any chair. They like to look neat even when they're relaxing.” The “Mr. and Mrs.” chairs also take note of Cupid. They are styled with a cut-away arm to
allow for what the manufac turer called “tete-a-tete groupe ing.” Foam rubber has just about displaced the spring and feather or cotton filling for cushions. ” . # “MAYBE the foam rubber will cost a little more,” said Mickey Klarnet of the Nemirow
Co., Inc., “but it lasts longer,
Springs will sag in time but our test with foam rubber show it will retain its shape and bounce through the years.’ Most of the furniture exe hibited took note of the homemaker in the small house or apartment. Plenty of the pieces
were massive, but others were
scaled down in size and had sleeker lines.
