PREDOMINANT shapes in fall handbags are boxes, pounches, satchels and clutch bags. There will be a strong trend toward the use of fabrics in place of leather. Dramatic new materials will include furred alpaca with a half-inch long silky nap, cream colored fleece, polished and marecelled mohair, looped boucle tweed and lustrous camels hair mixed with cashmere as well as wool flannels and corduroys. Softness is the outstanding characteristic—softness of line and silhouet, softness through clever manipulation of leather or fabric. Some of the boxes and pouches have no frames at all and others attain their soft look by curyed and rounded silhouets or from skillful sculpturing of the leather or fabric over sponge rubber. Many of the boxes are larger, more roomy, either through

the new boxes is in leatherlined black antelope or calf, measuring an impressive thirteen inches in length and five-by-five in height and depth. In dramatic contrast to the sooty black antelope, the box has a 24K gold-plated luggage type handle and. lock, and goldplated reinforcements at all the corners, similar to a miniature trunk, This is also done in. a smaller version for the smaller woman. Another elongated, round barrel-shaped box in brown calf is completely soft and squashy except for the top frame. It is beige leather lined and fitted with a handsome brown leather wallet and key case. (Leather wallet and key case fittings are found in a number of bags this fall.) An oval box in black cashmere has an unusual silk smocking effect. Another oval shape in brown suede has a demure flared cape completely encircling the box, reflecting the large cape collars on some of the new fall coats. = n ” BECAUSE OF elegance of material and richness of trim in some of the fall ready-to-wear, there are handbags which have been kept elegantly simple as a foil. These are sleekly contoured in velvet, dull satin, cashmere, suede or calf with just the barest accent of trim. For instance, one softly-curved black velvet box has a tiny gold bumble bee at the lock— no other trim. Some of the bags have dainty little gold and enamel touches at the opening = sk
while others have miniature gold crests or lacy gold filigree
effects—all on the diminutive scale, The cummerbund box looks very new. This effect is achieved by a manipulation of the leather or fabric, either by stitching or tucking horizontally around the box, giving the same feeling as the pleated and
tucked cummerbund which en-....
hances the midriff of so many fall dresses.
The lunch-box type of bag in tremendous, medium or small sizes looks excitingly different in natural camel's hair or bright jewel tones of pinwale corduroy. Corduroys in brillant or muted-tones in interesting styles and shapes appear in many of the fall handbag collections due to the prevalence of this fabric not only in casual wear but in elaborate coats and dresses — some lavishly fur trimmed.
Travel or commuter bags this fall will also be‘known as career bags. Handbag manufacturers, sensing that so many women love the roominess and many pockets and compartments of these bags, have given them brand new treatment in silhouet and materials to add drama to fall casual clothes. Long envelopes or underarm bags are significant to give complementary balance to the barrel-back short coats or tubular silhouets. One of the elongated envelopes, for instance, is a spectacular 17 inches in length.

Good Exercise
For Hot Day
Here's an easy exercise for a hot day. Copy your cat's way of stretching. Stretch tall if you're cramped from sitting
still, Stretch long—in bed—if you can’t get to sleep. To lift the chest, stretch arms straight out in front, shoulder high; turn hands back to back and swing arms to the sides as in a swimming breast stroke. . To pull in the midriff, swing arms slowly up at sides, bending elbows, until your hands meet behind your neck, finger tips touching. These few exercises will relax, refresh and beautify your figure, with no
stress or strain.

Hashburgers Are Easy on Budget
Open-faced hashburgers are sure to satisfy boys’ appetites when they come home starved from a hard day's play. This dish can be prepared on short notice, and, best of all, it's easy on your budget. Open one pound can of corned-beef hash at both ends, push out in one piece and cut into eight slices. Brown on one side only in salad oil or fat in large skillet over moderate heat; takes about five minutes. Meanwhile split and toast four hamburger buns; spread lightly with butter or margarine. Top each half with a slice of the corned-beef hash then add spoonful of catsup and onion rings. Makes four servings.
