The great essay in modern music makes strénuolis demands on listeners, and possibly even frays some nerves. Pierre Monteux, who conducted, had conducted the 1913 world premiere of the Stravifisky “Sacre du printemps” in Paris. He also had introduced the composition to this country with the Boston Symphony in 1924.
Hisses Turn to Cheers
Last May he had a second chance to conduct the “Sacre” in Paris with the Boston orchestra, winning an ovation in place of the hisses accorded the 1913 premiere. f His triumph here drew one of the biggest receptions I've yet seen a conductor get. I lost count of ¢ calls. There must have been about 10, and the bravos kept getting louder. The squareshouldered, stocky little man with a walrus mustache half concealing a benign Gallic smile] looked pleased. i He had earned the ovation. He| had earned it, as he would be first to admit, with superb assistance from the Boston Symphony. Greatly augmented in all

the noisier departments of wind instruments and percussion, the orchestra handled the immense technical difficulties of Stravinsky's score as if they were not | much more trouble than Sousa.! (I hasten to add they are, including some wild off-beat, crossrhythm stuff, shot through with dissonant brass blasts, that makes the noblest effort of Stan Kenton sound like the seventh; grade band from Tanktown). Now in his mid-70s, Mr. Monteux puts many a younger conductor to shame with his memory and his skill. Using no score, he described in gesture a clear pattern of the shifting meters and
