$225 Million
Fund Going To Gls Out Since 1950
By ALBERT M. COLEGROVE
Seripps-Howard Staff Writer
WASHINGTON, July 30~—Some, 800,000 veterans are going to! strike it rich no further from!
home than their mailboxes in the next few months.
The money they will divvy on|
~somewhere around $225 million --is a surprise package wrapped
by Congress during the final days of its session in this critical elec-|
tion year.
The veterans who will get it| are ‘those who've been honorably |
discharged from any of the armed forces since June 26, 1950. Some will receive as little as $100. Others will draw $500; maybe even more than that. Don’t confuse this bonanza with that earmarked to let veterans attend college, buy new homes, start businesses, etc. That's an-
other $1 billion a year, an entire- |
ly different proposition. The people eligible for the $100$500 checks will get them just by writing. And in some cases, even that won't be necessary.
Here's a rough estimate of how |
the money will be split, and who'll get it:
$200 Million
First and biggest, about $200 million will be mailed in “muster-Ing-out pay” to 800,000 former enlisted men and lower-ranking officers from all the services. Second, about $15 million will help 125,000 Army and Air Force Reserve and National Guard officers pay for uniforms they had to buy when they were recalled to active duty. Third, and this is really more of a guess than an estimate, about $10 million in “combat pay” is owed to ex-servicemen who got shot at in Korea.

Ex-servicemen who spent less {than 60 days in uniform after June 26, 1950, will receive $100. Men with more than 60 days’ service—but none of it overseas— get $200. Those with overseas duty are due for $300. Nobody above the rank of captain in the Army, Air Force and Marines, or Senior Lieutenant in the Navy is eligible. . The money for the officers’ uniforms was written into the Armed Forces Reserve Act. In general, {it provides $100 for recalled officers who had been out of the service two years or more when they were summoned back to duty. The combat duty pay act of 11952 provides $45 a month for
