among the public about -vhen rent controls do end. The rent office phone jangles constantly, he said. According to the 1950 census
there are 134,654 dwelling units in Indianapolis, of these 62,187 are rented and 69559 are’ owner accupied. There are 1482 vacancies and another 1427 units vacant, but unfit for habitation, Mr. Schaefer reported. Vacancy Rate 1.1 Per Cent “That's a vacancy rate of about 1.1 per cent,” he said. “Generally, a 5 per cent vacancy rate is considered normal.” Rents here have increased 20 per cent “across the boards” since 1941, Mr. Schaefer said. Additional increases have been permitted thousands of landlords for substantial improvements and repairs. Mr, Schaefer estimates that, that, under the | critical area classification. the ‘rent office now has more than 125000 units registered.
