Hog Prices Gain Sharply

~ CHICAGO, July 26 (UP) — A sharp increase in hog prices, one of “the season's best advances, punctuated activity at the livestock markets here this past week.

The sheep market was dull, even sluggish, with emphasis on the buying side. An unevenly lower dressed lamb market erased anything resembling a normal shipping demand. In the cattle pens, another week of decreased receipts, although receipts were still 15 per cent larger than a year ago, helped induce a tone of pressure. This pressure also was aided by the lower beef prices in the wholesale markets. In the hog market a top of $24 was paid sparingly late in the week and was the top price since February, 1951. Butcher hogs scaling 270 pounds continued scarce and scored the sharpest ddvance reducing the unséasonal| wide price spread. Buyers were not out for the number all week and there was) little buying for quality in the fast action of the trade. At the close a car of sorted choice Number 1 210-1b. butchers brought

Grain Trends Mixed; Losses

Ovutnumber Gains

CHICAGO, July 26 (UP)—The {grain futures market spiraled through a mixed week at the Board of Trade with no set trend and losses more in evidence than consistent gains. .

Steady of the cereals but they, too, showed only moderate signs 'of firmness. Corn ended the ses{sion more than four cents under the week ago price and rye fell about two cents. Soybeans of the July delivery closed at the OPS ceiling of $3.33 a bushel Wednesday due mainly to the franctic effort of short interests to cover their commitments. Thursday's trade showed the first real gains of the week and this strength seemed bent to continue through Friday but just about 20 minutes before the close of trading futures tumbled to post losses for the session.

A CONTRIBUTING factor in the two-day gain was the report from Washington that the cost. of living index had taken another hike. Other influences were the settlement of the steel strike and a carrying-over period from the late rallies of Thursday.
