Navy Confirms Plane Speed of
1238 Miles an Hour
LOS ANGELES, July 17 (UP) —-Secretary of the Navy Dan A. Kimball confirmed last night | that the Navy's D-582-2 8kyrocket has flown 1238- miles per|
hour. It also urged — scientists to develop an atomicpowered plane.
In a statement issued by naval officers at Mr. Kimball's news| conference, he officially confirmed | reports of the rocket plane's amazing speed and said it had) reached an altitude of 79,494 feet in a test flight. Word that ie Blane had flown | nearly 1300 miles*per hout leaked out earlier this week, but the Navy and the Douglas Aircraft | Co., which built the Skyrocket, refused to confirm the report. !
