Muncie Jail
Action to Close It Threatened
Times State Service MUNCIE, July 17—State Welfare Board inspectors today again branded the antiquated Delaware County Jail “wholly unfit and
unsuitable” and- threatened condemnation proceedings if county officials fail to act. The escape-easy Muncie jail has long been a target of criticism. Pointing out several prisoners have escaped in ‘the past few months, inspectors said the jail “lacks practically all of the five basic essentials of a county jail, namely strength, security, safety, sanitation and segregation.” They said nothing has been done to correct any conditions since previous inspections and once more recommended the county take action. , ‘Under the law the report goes ta Circuit Court Judge Joe Davis, who recently threatened to close the jail and transfer prisoners to another county. Man, Wife Injured In 2-Car Crash
A Hartford City man, on his first vacation in 20 years, was injured critically and ,his wife also hurt in a 2-car crash today southwest of Indianapolis.
In grave condition in Veterans Administration Hospital was John Burnworth, 66. His wife, Laura, 62, was in fair condition in General Hospital. She told sheriff's deputies her husband, driving east on Epler| Ave., failed to heed a stop sign at Harding St. Their car was struck by a southbound car, driven by Robert Alcorn, 41, Greenwood. Mr. Burnworth was knocked unconscious as he and his wife were thrown 10 feet from the car. Mr. Alcorn was shaken up.
