That means that the entire set provides about five hours of the finest classical plano music there is. . People who appreciate that sort of thing— and there are a great many of us -are served an opulent feast in this release.
4 » ” ” DEBUSSY: PRELUDES, Books I and II, on Columbia records ML4537 and ML-4538, provide good demonstrations that Gieseking is master of the Debussy repertoire. Each record consists of a dozen short pieces that have been described as Debussy’s most original works. ” td » DEBUSSY: CHILDREN’S CORNER SUITE and also his “Suite

» . ” MOZART: CONCERTO NO. 25 in A Major for Piano and Orchestra, and Cesar Franck’s “Symphonic Variations for Piano and Orchestra” are played by Gieseking oh record ML-4536, with accompaniment provided by Herbert von Karajan and The Philharmonia Orchestra. Both are impressive works for piano and orchestra, and they are impressively played.
Orchestra, on’ record MIL-4535, rounds out the six-volume" Gieseking release. 243 on the preceding record, von jan "and the Philharmonia provide the accompaniment. Mention should be made of the striking new-design covers in which these records are encased.| They are offered as separate rec-, ords, of course, as well as in sets of six. Don Gabor’s Remington Records have come out with some interesting new classical releases that will appeal to budget-minded collectors of high-class musit. Ameig them: a
» td » BACH: PARTITA NO. 6 in E| Minor is on one side of Remington record R.199.92; on the other side is the same composer’s “Preludes and Fugues in G Major and] G Minot” from Book II of “The| Well-tempered Clavier.” Both were recorded in Europe by Jorg| Pemus, pianist, the brilliant young) musical prodigy from Vienna. Only 24 years old, he handles these big Bach works as smoothly and artistically as a veteran.
= » 2 SCHUMANN: SYMPHONIC ETUDES (Op. 13) and Brahms’ “Variations on a Theme of Handel” are on the two sides of 12inch Remington LP record R.199.91. Edward Kilenyi, noted American pianist of Hungarian extraction, is the artist, and he shows the talent and technique in these recordings that have made him a favorite soloist with Sir Thomas Beecham, Charles Munch, George Szell and other outstand-| ing conductors. i Robert Schumann was born in| 1810 and died in 1856. During the| few years of his, tragic life he wrote some of the most beautiful music the world has ever known.| Brahms never married and lived! a very simple and austere life, which was devoted entirely to his art. He is one of the very few composers whose greatness and
