Blackwood on Bridge—

" HY,” writes Dr. McL, “do you occasionally let Mr. Abel, Miss Brash, etc,

double ‘in a loud voice’ or play a card ‘emphatically’? Aren't such practices. unethical?”

Technically, you are right, Doctor. The proprieties of the game say, ‘a player should refrain from calling with special emphasis, inflection or intonation or giving by word, manner or gesture, an indication of the nature of the hand held.” That is the 1a {deal and we Mr. New should all try to conform to it. But bridge players are people and bridge is an exciting game of wits. In this column I merely report what happens and. I would not be giving a true picture if I reported that all players followed the above proprieties completely at all times.

SURELY YOU MUST know from your own games that now and then a player who wouldn't dream of taking unfair advantage of his opponents, lets a loud double slip in or possibly directs an angry glance at his partner.

I am not condoning any deviation from the absolute in ethical play. In my game deviations do occur, although not often. They will continue to occur unless the game is given up by human beings and played exclusively by passionless automatons,

Of course I realize that there =.

Groucho—He’s Shy, Retiring—So0 He Says

By Kathleen ~ INSIDE GROUCHO MARX: “Groucho Marx ought to be funny,” said Eddie Cantor recently, “he practices 24 hours a day.” According to an article in the August Esquire that’s only pact of the story. Referring to Groucho in “My Life in Figishing School,” the story statés “Groucho Marx can get away with saying anything he wants to because there's never any malice in any of the insults.” Sometimes there's room for doubt about that statement, as some of his subjects can verify. Groucho, says Esquire, is a shy, thoughtful, worrying man, who early in life wanted to be a doc- : tor. : He is 61 years old, and a little sensitive about his age; but he looks 45 and acts a good deal younger. He's proud of his figure —he's 5 feet, 8 inches tall and weighs 156 pounds—and he keeps in trim by playing golf and being the first to leave cocktail parties. He reads constantly, dreams of playing Shakespeare, sings Gil-

| BEND WIRE HANGERS INTO DOLL. STANDS

Be Srodee

By Dick Turner.

Hera, SWEET

On one of these hot days why don’t you get your girl| friends together and hold a doll show? Take your favorite | dolls and line them up in the form of a parade. | Vanessa Dawn Dehne of Beaver Dam, Wis., suggests making standards for them out of coat hangers. You bend the wire in such a way that it will hold the doll up. You might first break some of the coat hangers when you bend | the hook. I did, when I was experimenting to find the best | method for holding the doll. Coat hangers are usually plentiful so that it won’t matter if you loose a few. | First bend the hook at an angle so it will go around | the neck or the waist of your doll. Now, bend the rest of | the hanger, as shown, to make a wide flat stand which will also help to hold the doll upright. If some of your dolls are | too small or too large for these standards, prop them against |
