stenes during those hours of oratory, marching and yelling.

got under way at Convention Hall. Words, words, and more words. { Downtown, Taft appealed to Warren to hold onto his delegates, stay in the race. Did the same with Stassen. Both Warren and Stassen agreed, to the anguish of most of their delegates. But delegates were bound by law th give first-ballot vote to their favorite sons, unless released. They had to stand.’ 80 Eisenhower forces began painful, back-breaking task of getting those last few vital delegates one by one, A man from this state, anothér from that one. Arguments, promises, reminders of past favors. . As usual, forces trying to stop flisenhower couldn't get together on one man. Some favored trying it with MacArthur, others wanted to go for Sen. Dirksen or Sen. Knowland. Rumors raged up and down every hotel corridor. Taft headquarters blanketed the town with hate-Dewey posters, charging “he is the candidate in everything except name.”
