Indict Brothers In Robbery
‘Clever Scheme’ Nets Kidnaping Charges | Two Kansas brothers who
thought they had a “foolproof scheme for robbery” tgday were
“Indicted here by the grand jury gy
on charges of kidnaping, armed robbery and auto banditry.
Now, all the Indianapolis police
have to do is get the brothers|y
away from Dallas, Tex. authortties where they're being held for vehicle taking. The “foolproof scheme” which John E. Smith, 24, and his broth-| er, Paul H., 17, of Hutchinson, Kas., admitted using to rob two filling station attendants here: was to kidnap the attendant in; a stolen car, rob him, dump him, then make their get-away in a second stolen car. i Admit ‘Routine’ | They admitted using this rou-| tine to rob Everett Rance, 19, Gaseteria attendant at 11th St. and Central Ave. on June 21, and again to rob George Pierce, 47, Hoosier Pete night attindant at 2201 N. Capitol Ave. the following night. According to police records, the brothers stole a car in Dallas, | Tex., and drove to Indianapolis. With them was John's 24-year-old bride, Linda. The brothers said she waited in the Texas car while they stole other cars here to pull Mer! “jobs ™
They were caught in a stole] police roadblock at Linden. Still another Smith brother, Robert,
confessions from the men while
police at Lafayette. The local detectives then sent a warrant
der for Paul.
rnd Warrants State police there returned warrants to Indianapolis and per mitted Dallas authorities to {ake the brothers to Yexas. } The Indianapolis detectives then) took their case to the grand jury! here. The three indictments against the Smiths have cleared | the way for the local police to at-| tempt to get the brothers back from Texas. Sgt. Haine said orders fo detain the two men are] being forwarded to Dallas imme-| diately. | If convicted on the kidnaping| charge, the brothers would be sentenced to serve a sandntory life term in prison. i
