Pages at Convention Serve Without Pay

By EDAN WRIGHT |

Times Special Writer - CHICAGO, July 10—The girl pages at the Republican convention wouldn't change jobs with anyone. They're getting a close-up of everything and every-

one. go anywhere in the building. The pages number about 300, A good half of them are girls— mostly between 15 and 25. They come from all over the nation and are appointed to their jobs: by party people. They serve without pay. Most of them have to provide their board, room and traveling expenses. :

. 8 8: NO ONE MINDS. Not even when the sessions run to 10 or 11 hours a day. To all of them being a page is a great honor, Take petite Eunice Harry of Pylesville, Ind. Eunice is 16 and a member of the Young Republican Chib in her state. Funice came to Chicago with her parents and her brother “to see everything first hand.”

” ” ~ CAROL MORGAN, 17, Guthrie, Okla. is a pretty blonde

who speaks with the serious--

ness of an old-time politician. “I've been in politics all my life,” she says. “I went to the convention in Philadelphia four yedrs ago as a visitor, I liked it so much I wanted to do it again.” Caropld’s father, Carl Morgan, is an alternate delegate from Oklahoma.

And they're just about the only people who can

signia ‘and a page badge gets them any place. * Their job inclules every kind of errand. Does someone need a paper or pencil? They are Johnny-on-the-Spot. ‘Telephone operators dispatch them with messages to the floor.

The press sends them to the

"VIP section to find a Senator.

A delegate sends them out for

_a snack at noon.

The radio and TV people have them scurrying through the tunnels with messages to the broadcast booths way up in top. In hetween they pick up bigwig speeches—hot off the mimeograph—to distribute to the press. They dash in and out with salt tablets for wilted conventioneers. s » . THE JOB isn't always easy. Sometimes they have a Mr. Smith to run down—and without much identification as to seating. Occasionally they pick up a tip for their errands. Delegates and the press are the nicest about this—the girls agree. “When they send us for food they tell us to buy yourself a sandwich or soft drink. And we always get a thank you, besides.”

SOMEONE asks you questions . about yo husband's business affairg$ that you don't care to answer.

WRONG. Feel that you must answer if they are point-blank questions.

RIGHT: Be vague. It is always better to leave the impression that you don't know all the details of your husband’s business affairs than to give out information to satisfy someone's idle curiosity. ” ” "

YOU WOULD like to have two of your friends meet each other.

WRONG: Keep talking about it, but leave it to chance.

RIGHT: Make some plans that will bring them together.
