Charles C. Merz, founder and former president of the Merz En- *" gineering Co. and pioneer race driver, died yesterday in his home at New Augusta, Mr. Merz is a former chief steward of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. In 1935 he succeeded the late Eddie Edenburn and served until 1940.
Mr: Merz started the company
with only 12 men at a small plant at 10th St. and Capitol Ave. Established to build parts and engines for airplanes, the business expanded to a new large building in 1941 at 200 8. Harding St.
Mr, Merz, who was 64, included J experimental engineering and designing and manufacture of machine tools in his new plant. He retired eight years ago because of ill health.
Served in Two Wars
Mr. Merz served in both World ‘Wars, In the first World coniflict he was major. in, charge of Service Production Center, Romorantin* France. | Recalled to active duty with the Air Force in 1940, he acted as liaison officer. between state gelective service headquarters staff and the assistant secretary of war. He also assisted the {local draft board and board of appeals in deciding occupational deferment cases.
