TV and Radio—

TV, Radio Go All Out | On Convention News

SUNDAY, JULY 6, 1952 .

By Kathleen

ONE OUT OF EVERY TWO AMERICANS will see the next President of the United States nominated during the}

next few weeks.

More than 1000 cameramen, reporters and other vol

clalists will be deployed in the convention hall by the big networks. : Millions of dollars’ worth of hew and improved equipment will make it possible for TV watchers

to pursue a presidential candidate

or a delegate right up to the door of his bathroom, practicaly the only dependable refuge he'll have from the inquiring gaze of half the. nation.

Just to keep things interesting, & walkie-talkie-lookie — portable TV camera and sending station— i to be unwrapped for the occasion.

The camera weighs 10 pounds and is connected by cable to a three-foot long, 50-pound back pack.

The back pack transmits images to a nearby station antenna and thence to the TV audi‘ence. : This means, of course, that a reporter, because of the complete

mobility of his equipment, can |

follow a subject anywhere he goes—a rather uncomfortable situation, I'd imagine. Another impressive item is a new truck-mounted mobile unit. The crew of this truck will be

able to take movies, develop the

film, project the negative into the tube of a TV camera and have a newsreel of an outstanding event on your home screen within an hour of the time it occurred. If, as many experts predict, this intimate acquaintanceship of a concerned audience with the candidates, results in more thoughtful voting and better se-

lection of public men, television i

may prove to be one of the greatest aids to self-government ever developed.

FOR THE individual networks

and their convention arrangements—we have NBC moving a staff of 300 men and women and $2 million worth of equipment into the Windy City for the two evénts. The network will cover the entire city of Chicago for remote broadcasts from every airport, railroad termfnal, political head-

quarters and major hotel—as well i as having TV cameras set up at 4

every. strategic point. To insure that no famous states ment made during the conventions is lost, NBC has established a large tape-recording room in

the North Wing of the Interna-

tional Amphitheater where complete recordings of every bit of convention-time proceedings 24hours a day will be recorded. WIRE will carry the broad-

casts here. " Ed .
