Times Church Editer Miss Mildred McClain talks " with quiet ‘confidence about becoming a sister of the United Lutheran Church: It is a pleasure to meet a young person who is so sure of her vocation ‘as she faces its *serious demands. Mildred first began to consider the calling of deaconess, or sister, while attending a church youth camp. And since she was about 14 ars old, she has known she would one day take the necessary training and finally wear the garb. While the life of a Lutheran sister is one of sacrifice, very few rules bind the young candidates. They may retire from the vocation an ytime they wish, may get married, or change to another type of effort. In fact, some young girls who are engaged to Lutheran ministers take special courses at one of the mother houses by way of preparation for the role of pastor’'s wife. Mildred was born in Indianapolis and was graduated from Technical High School. She has completed two years at Carthage College, Lutheran school, Carthage, Ill. In September, she will enter the Baltimore mother house to take two years of training. Afterward, she will return to Carthage College for one year of schooling before consecration. If I may mention a less important phase of this matter, I'll say the habit, or “garb” as Lutherans call, is quite engaging to * my way of thinking. In winter, the sisters, wear a little black pillbox hat with a bit of veiling blowing in the back, a black frock with a snowy collar and whatever black coat they wish. The frock is cut very much like a nurse’s uniform. Gray replaces black and short sleeves replace long sleeves for the sum-
