Overcall Bid Vulnerable

THIS HAND was a danger. ous misfit for both sides. Whoever got the bid was in for a lot of trouble. After Mr. Abel doubled Mr. Champion's two club over-call, Mrs. Keen started thinking about’ her next bid. She wasn’t quite sure whether she should rebid her spades or bid two diamonds. One thing was sure—she was not going to let the double stand. Her problem was solved by Mr. New. HE bid two diamonds. Mrs, Keen's best action was now clear. A profit at diamonds was acceptable to

her, no matter who got to play ~

the contract. She doubled. With a disguested snort, Mr. Champion bid three clubs and Mr. Abel doubled again. This time Mrs. Keen felt justified in letting the double stand, Mr. Champion went down one, two hundred points, losing two clubs, two spades and a heart. This was not a big loss, of course, and it is true that Mr. Champion would not have been permitted to play two clubs doubled because Keen would have taken it out, The point is, however, that if Mr. New had passed, as he should have, there was an excellent chance that Mrs. Keen and Mr. Abel would get into a contract which they could not make, “Why would you:take me out of two clubs, New?” inquired Mr, Champion. “I couldn't stand clubs. I had a singleton,” Mr. New replied. “You could stand two clubs a lot better than you could stand what would have happened to you at diamonds,” barked Mr. . “If 1 had wanted you to show your best suit I have doubled.
