Song of Norwa A Lively Show

_First production of the I mer, the operetta based on Grieg’s life and music is a lively shaw. Even in Thursday's dress re-| hearsal, when action had to be repeated frequently to iron out difficulties, the operetta looked .and sounded very handsome indeed. i Sprains an Ankle | A major problem in the Thurs-! day rehearsal was the temporary grounding of Peter Hamilton, ‘choreographer of the Opera Workshop, who had been carrying the main burden of solo dances. r. Hamilton slipped and sprained an ankle during Wednes-| day's rehearsal. He hopes to] be back in shape by the July 11 and 12 pair of performances. Courageously substituting for him is Jack Craig of Indianapolis, who does a remarkably good | job on such short notice. “Song of Norway” hardly needs -summary here. As season-opener for the 1951 Starlight Musicals of blessed memory, it proved more interesting musically than dramatically, The story is nothing to brag about. And what comedy there is often descends to the silliness common to most operettas. Some Fine Singing In the Grieg role, Eugene Bayless, veteran of “Parsifal,” “Belshazzar’s Feast” and other big productions by Dean Wilfred C. Bain’s music school, does some fine singing and credible acting. | Opposite him, Pat Gamber, a| newcomer to the East Hall stage, is more effective in singing than! in speaking and acting. Carol Rawlings, as opera singer

A Real Spectacle

Car] Shain, stage director, and Robert Burns #tévens, who did settings and lighting, both deserve praise. With extremely | economical - staging, they have contrived to make the show a! real spectacle. ; Costumes, for which the pro-! gram credits Miss Kincade, cer-| {tainly help a lot. They're quite stunning. JA final word of praise for John Judd, pianist, who does well with the condensed version of Greig's | A minor Concerto in the rather!

Harvest Workers

In Small Demand

ABERDEEN, 8. D., July 4 (UP) | —The State Employment Service: reported yesterday a smaller de-| mand for harvest workers was in-| dicated by higher sales of small | combines in-South Dakota. | The service reported sheep shearing in the state was 90 per) cent complete and sugar beet har-| vesting should be finished by next | Tuesday. Scattered grain harvesting may | begin in the southern part of the | state before the end of the week, | {the Employment Service reported. | A shortage of 34 single workers | and 19 farm couples in South Da-! kota was reported. At Winner! seven farm couples and 16. farm! hands were needed but Water-: town reported there was no de-| mand for farm labor in that area | because rains were too late to {help the small grain crop.
