side has the balance of power. This is an- ability which Mr. Muzzy does not possess. When he has a good hand, as in today's deal, he fights to the bitter end. And, in many cases, the end is bitter indeed: This refusal to let the opponents play a harmless un-der-game contract is a common error and it is hard to understand why. When there are definite clues that the enemy has the edge in high cards, what can be gained by continuing the auction? In today's deal Mr. Muzzy had a fine hand. However, his partner had shown no indication: of strength while both of his opponents had.

MEEK can almost always be figured for more than his bidding has indicated. He had more this time. He bid three spades. And although he paled a bit when Miss Brash took a shot at four, he lived to thank her for it. Mr. Muzzy opened the king of hearts and Miss Brash had no difficulty wrapping up ten tricks. She: simply cashed her two red aces and cross-ruffed the two red suits, giving up only three club tricks at the end. }
