Urge Chapel Be Built on = Capitol Hill

- WASHINGTON, July 1 (CDN)~ -~A growing number of members lof Congress think something [should be added to the naMon's Capitol—a room in which to pray. The idea occurred to Sen. A. 8, (Mike) Monroney (D. Okla.) and Rep. Brooks Hays (D. Ark.) as they walked away from a Sunday evening religious gathering in {Washington last February. Both men had been struck by the many Senators and Congressmen they had seen at the meeting. “There ought to ‘be some place in the Capitol to which members could- go to pray and meditate during the week,” remarked Rep.

Hayes.

“Why shouldn't there be?” r plied Sen. Monroney: z ” tJ n THE NEXT DAY, Sen. Monroney and Rep, Hays introduced resolutions in - the Senate and House directing the Capitol archi-

{tect to set aside a room near the {Capitol rotunda for the use. of {members of Congress as a chapel.

Officially, nothing has happened yet. Unofficially, the idea has received a wide welcome. News of it is spreading around the. counetry. The laymen’s movement. for ia Christian world has taken lit up. This group was influential {in having a similar room. set

{aside at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

“I.think a chapel would serve two purposes,” says Rep. Hays. {“It would be a facility which {mary members of Congress would use. “It also. would be a symbol of the proper place for ‘religion in our daily Hives: n o SEN. MONRONEY and ‘Rep. Hays aren't pressing their plan. When enough people want the room, they feel sure the Senate Rules Committee and the House Administration Committee = will provide it, in spite of crowded conditions in the Capitol. " “There has been some discussion of decoration,” Rep. Hays says.: “At first I thought of providing altars for each religious faith. But now I think the room should express religious unity, rather than differences. “People of all faiths will use. it, and it should be a room in {which all will feel at home. “I think the furnishings should express quiet serenity and uplifting simplicity.” Rep. Hays says the only note |of protest he has heard conterns {the principle of separation of church and state. “But this does not conflict,” he says. “Both the Senate and. the, House have chaplains. hrs Ain Cop’ Plans to Retire

Times State Service BLOOMINGTON, July 1-"“Pete, the Campus Cop,” is going to retire. Walter Peterson, who's had the job of taking care of Indiana University students since 1925, is going to spend the rest of hisdays on his front porch. He retired once before, but IU’s Board of Trustees called him back to watch ° over the students. Pete, who is 75, spent most of his time at the school checking up on students involved in automobile accidents or taking care of students who got in trouble through a college prank. The team of “Pete and Clay.” was broken up last year when former Bloomington Police Chief Clay, his partner, died: They both worked for the dean of students.
