‘Branches in Christ’
Scripture: “I am the vine, Je. My the branches.” John
THIS IS the season for
. gardening. God too has a
garden. In it is one choice vine. Jesus says, “I am THE vine.” Vines have branches. The branches in Christ Jesus, the true Vine, are people. We too are branches, either in Christ or in some false vine. Surely, we want to be branches in the true Vine that will abide forever. How can we become such a branch? First, we must be cleansed from all #in. Jesus thus addresses His disciples: “Now ye are clean through the words which I have spoken unto you.” Jesus’ words are all-important. They explain why God planted Him in the world. In Luke 19, 10 Jesus says, “The Son of man fs- come to seek and to save that which was lost.” His words tell why

Word, the Bible, believe His words, and you too shall become a branch in Him, ® = = A GOOD VINE gives good fruit. Yet the vine, that is the stem, does not give the fruit, but the branches. So Christ, the Vine, gives life and strength to us, the branches, and we must bear the fruits. What are the fruits? In Galatians 5, Paul answers, “The fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance.” There is an entire sermon in each of these nine words. But in order that we can give these fruits, we must remain united with the vine. No matter how good the vine, if the branch is broken, it cannot bear fruit. So we, if we are severed from Christ and His Word, become spiritually dry, fit only to be broken off and
cast into the fires of hell. But if we do abide in Christ, and His words abide in us, we shall bring forth much fruit. It just works out that way, A true Christian does g works, just like a good branch gives good fruit. The true Vine, Christ, with all its branches, the believers, has a craetaker. “My Father is the husbandman,” Jesus says. If the Father sees branches that give no fruit, He cuts them off and casts them away. Let us take warning.
» » ” BUT ALSO those branches that do bear fruit, the heav- | enly Father purges or trims so that they will bear more fruit. Here is an answer to the question, “Why must Christians suffer in this life?” The Father is not punishing their sins. No, Christ has borne all
that. Rather He. is trimming (}
away those things that may tempt or harm us. Heavenly Father, make me a true branch in Christ. Then my life shall glorify Thee, I shall be a true disciple, and shall ! fine the real joy of life. Amen.
