By JOAN SCHOEMAKER HORACE GREELEY'S * advice, “Go West, young man, go West,” has been shortened to “Go.” This year's crop of high school graduates gets a boost from a few of last year’s graduates. All of them say to get started on your career or whatever plans you have as soon as possible. Whethér it's college, a job, service or marriage, the answer is the same. Plan, don't get excited, decide where you're going in life and learn to take things on the chin. If it's at all possible, go to college. Barbara Smith, 8195 N. Pennsylvania St, just fin. ished her first year in Goucher College.

- » “THE MOST important thing,” Barbara says, “is to establish the proper attitude toward gaining a college education. Not everyone gets to

go. “When you get there,” she continues, “don’t compare your next door neighbor or roommate with your crowd at home, Don’t compare your professors with your high school teachers. Set out to make the best of your situation. Barbara feels college students should be independent of their family while at school. This is a time when you start making your own decisions, but still under a bit of supervision. “The well-adjusted college student will find time divided into three directions, academic, social and extracurricular activities. Spend your time well,” she advises, “with a balance in the three divisions. EJ » un “HIGH SCHOOL graduates have an opportunity to become anything in the world they set their hearts on,” she believes. “Work and will power will accomplish the goal, Decide what the goal is, thrust your heart into your decision and aim for the highest star.” Sgt. rison, feels that even draft-age graduates should go to college if it's is possible. . “If the uncertainty of whether “you'll be ‘leaving for the service bothers you a great deal,” he says, “go ahead and join. When you're in, take advantage of all the opportunities there. Go on to officer's candidate school. It might help you get a job later, At least it can't hurt you.” s ” » JIM AND ALYCE ABRAHAM, 1934 E. Epler Ave, were graduated from Washington High School last June and married in April. Both working, Jim and Alyce give advice to this year's graduates on two scores. They agree, too, that college is important. “You can't get too much education,” Alyce believes. “I'd even be glad to help Jim get through school while I work, because I feel it is important for a man to have an education to get ahead in his job. However, I don't believe it would be good for both of us to work and both try to go to school, too. That's too much of a load.” “Be independent,” Jim says. “Stand on your own feet and have confidence in yourself. It

if you plan a career, go to college,” she added. . “After graduation be sure to take a vacation, since you won't get much of one once you start working. It's hard at first to get used to the new job routine, Participating in company recreational activities helps make the job just that much more interesting, too.

“When looking for advancenent, work in a small organjzadon,” she suggests. :

Jobs are always available for the person with the proper attitude and the proper training. This year's graduates should have as much success as last year’s crop. The degree of sucess is up to the individual.
