Can't Tell Caddies From Players in Junior Event

ally can't tell the players from the caddies opens tomorrow over Purdue University’s South course. More than 200 youngsters, 20 years of age and under, will tee up at the course that is so hilly that being part mountain goat would be a great asset to anybody playing there. By the middle of last week a total of 183 entries had been received for the annual event. Officials expect the -final number to be well above 200 since entries can be made until noon tomorrow. In charge of the tourney will be Earl Ensinger, who handles the young swingers in a masterful manner, and Francis Truitt, the USGA junior representative from Indiana. ” » ” ” » " ‘The tournament is a serious matter for these youngsters, who always put on a display of competitive spirit that matches any in the world of golf.

s . » ”

- » THE PURDUE layout is an ideal location for the |

tournament, since most of the youngsters are housed at Carey Hall on the Purdue campus, only a short walk from the golf course. The boys who come to this tournament from all parts of the state are eager to play golf and do their best | in competition. An example of this came last year when

. the junior was played at Purdue.

A group of youngsters between the ages of 15 and 17 came to the tournament from the eastern part of the | state. After a few days they found they had run ost of money. Were they discouraged? Not these boys. They slept on the ground outside the pro shop and earned their meals picking up pop bottles. A Butler University student will be defending the title of the ice cream and soda pop circuit this year. He is Karl Nessler, 240-pound slammer who cut down all competition last year. During last summer Karl transferred from Rollins College to Butler. Big Karl calls Seymour home but ploys : out of the indianapelis Country € Club. :

» IN LAST YEAR'S final, he def medal honors this year during the qualifying round, preferring to take the No. 1 spot in the pairings. ~The 64 low shooters in the qualifying round will be in the championship flight while the others will go in lower flights. The final round, 36 holes, will be played Friday. All other flights will end a day earlier.

» ” ” ” » 5 During the week the Junior Golf Association will hold its annual meeting and election of officers. Present officers are James Balch of Indianapolis, president; Herman Uebele Jr., La Porte, vice president; Darrell McFall, Indianapolis, secretary, and John Grubb, Marion, treasurer. Boyd Hovde of Lafayette is the local representative of the officer committee.

» n » “ ” 8 THE INDIANAPOLIS representatives have a chance to bring home the title this year with such players as Balch, Darrell McFall, John Roberts, Harry Poland Jr., Bob Dyar, Bob Ball and others.
