Delayed Bid Strategy Pays Off for Mr. Dale -
OUR FAILURE to come in over an adverse overcall doesn't mean you are barred from the bidding forever. In today’s deal Mr, Dale could find no good bid after Mr, Abel ? overcalled with two hearts. He didn’t have adequate trump support for his partner's spades and he was
enough to bid three clubs or two no trump. He might have taken a shot at doubling two hearts but that would have
Mr. Dale
{| been pretty risky. All in all, his
best action was to pass and await developments. If his partner could not find another bid then surely his side had no game, : Looking at it the other way around, if Mr, Dale had put in a bid at this point, Mr. Meek would have - been. justified in
expecting more. And he might |
have bid the-hand overboard. n ” ” WHEN MR. MEEK bid three diamonds on the second round, Mr. Dale swung into action. He did not make the mistake of showing a mere preference for spades or of raising the diamonds to four. He knew a lot more now than at the begin-
ning. He knew Mr. Meek's spade suit was at least five long, that Mr. Meek’s hand was well above a minimum and that his own ace and two queens were fitting cards. No reason to

hand in game at spades. Mr. Abel opened the king of hearts and continued with the ace, which Mr. Meek trumped.
A small trump was led to the queen and Mr. Meek did not like the looks of Mr. Abel's 10 spot. With typical caution, he abandoned the trump suit and started leading diamonds, Mrs. Keen ruffed the third diamond and returned the queen of hearts. Mr: Meek refused to ruff. He just discarded his losing club. Now, another heart lead could be ruffed on the board, preserving Mr. Meek’s own trump length. Mrs. Keen shifted to a club and “the ace won. Mr. Meek then picked up the remaining trumps and spread the hand.

A MINIATURE NDIAN TEPEE
SuP 2 Sena TEKS Wl
I recently visited one of the largest and most success-| ful Scout-O-Ramas in the country. At the TRY IT booth | for the Milwaukee Journal, thousands of Milwaukee Cubs and Scouts came by to say hello and many left samples of | itheir Scout activities. Edward Heidenreich of Pack 75
brought along the miniature tepee shown above. | He cut a 55-inch cardboard for the base and cut 12
34-inch notches, evenly around the edge about 114 inches apart. The tepee poles were 12 6-inch swab sticks tied to-| gether and about 114 inches down from the top. The tepee cover was cut from a half of a 10-inch circle, drawn on a piece of sheet. An X marks the spot | where the center of the circle is, showing that the smoke | “ears” or flaps extend beyond the circle. Test first with a |
cloth. Pin this all together with half toothpicks. TOMORROW-—Pretty Paper Hat Favors.
