‘Confidence i in God’ By the Rev. Fr. Philip Marquard, O.F. M.

‘Seripture: “They trusted in “Thee, and were not confounded.” Psalms 21:6.

“WHY IS IT that so many do not put their full condence in God? They see

misery all around them and

they think that if there is a God He would not permit such misery. With the gloomy atheist Schopenhauer, some go 80 far as to say: “If there were a Gad, T should not wish to be God; for my heart would he torn to shreds at the sight of so yich misery.” How blasphemous. Surely ~ there is plenty of misery in thé world. At present we--have some frightful wars. But is God to blame? No. The trouble is God has some very wicked children. The greater part of the suffering in the world is self-inflicted-—inflicted by men themselves. God gave all a free will, and He will not take this gift away. Nor will He interfere in the use of it. ¥or that very reason Christ says in the parable ‘of the cockle and the wheat that He will let both graw till the harvest.
