Class Tells and Robinson's Got It

NEW YORK, June 21—When class is pitted against mediocrity it is generally no contest. All the class will be on Sugar Ray Robinson's side when he answers the bell in his triple crown argosy against Joey Maxim in Yankee Stadium Monday night. And, as it does so often, I think class will tell. Of course, this is a unique test. Maxim will come in as a big light heavyweight, Robinson a little middleweight. By fight time the weight spread will be a minimum 16 pounds and it might go as high as 20. Even up in weight, the Harlem Hot Shot would be a 10-to-1 shot. With this considerable weight pull, Maxim two years younger, an experienced brawler who has traded punches with the likes of Walcott and Charles with no serious consequences, has got to be a great deal stronger, and

it's elementary that the strong conquer the weak. But |

certain refinements prevail in the ring, such as rules, fastidious referees and one-minute rest intervals, and these can inimically affect basic values and deflate bulging

muscles. ; . = = . 8 =

IT WOULD seem reasonable to assume Maxim's position is advantageous, but until the actual firing starts we will have no way of knowing for sure. In this connection, I find myself wondering if weight is as important as size. Fitzsimmons was a middleweight when he knocked out Jim Corbett to win the heavyweight championship. But in —~ height and reach the difference on the tape measure was significant. Weight is the only thing Robinson will be conceding in his effort to join Fitzsimmons and Henry Armstrong as triple crowners, for he's almost as alt as Maxim and his reach just about equal. Handicapped by small and brittle hands from the beginning, the Cleveland Italian has never been a murderous puncher. Even if the weight pull should give him

"more hitting force, relatively, it can’t be enough to make

him a killer. Nor can it accelerate his. hand speed or intensify the wrist snap at the moment of impact, vital essentials to power, . . » . . » IN A STREET fight Maxim's physical advantage would be honestly rewarded. ‘And no matter how studiously you ponder the weight disparity and its possible influences, you always come back to full recognition that Robinson, though bowing gradually to the calendar, is still the remarkable boxer-hitter of our time. Any attempt to put Maxim over Robinson in this one imposes great strain on optimism and ingenuity. No matter how | try to make it come out Maxim | always get Robinson for an answer. There is, however, an intangible that offers some hope, it is the dread Maxim has of losing to a middleweight. This has become an obsession with him. He puts it in words, “I was brought up as a street fighter and any time a big guy lost to a little guy he became an outcast. If I can’t beat Robinson I'll be almost too ashamed to return home.” » » . ¥ » # IF MAXIM can keep on top of Robinson throughout and bang away at his middle he can win. But to accomplish this Maxim must make an overnight change from a stand up, step around boxér to a ceaseless rusher and when you have been fighting one way for a dozen years the task of revising your attack almost completely can not be a simple one.
