Capital Goes For Harriman
By United Press ~~ WASHINGTON, June 18— Averell Harriman today pocketed the District of Columbia's six Desogratic national convention votes with a runaway primary victory over Sen. Estes Kefauver of Tennessee. Tt was Mr. Hirriman's first venture into primary election competition, and Mr. Kefauver’'s second setback in the 16 primaries which he has entered. The Tennesseean lost to Sen. Richard B. Russell of Georgia in the Florida race. Complete returns — except for write-in votes—from the District of Columbia's 45 polling places gave Mr. Harriman 14,075 votes to. 3377 for Mr. Kefauver, Mr. Harriman won 41 of the 45 contests, and lost to Mr. Kefauver in one race by only a single vote. Mr. Harriman, who supports the policies of the Roosevelt and Truman administrations “without compromise,” got strong support from the capital's Negro voters. He has campaigned down the line for President Truman's Civil Rights program. Mr. Kefauver opposes compulsory federal employment practices legislation, District of Columbia residents help pick presidential nominees, but have no vote in the direct election of President, Congressmen or other officials. : The six Republican delegate votes went to Sen. Robert A. Taft
