Into Summer Season With the Steeplechase
By KATY ATKINS
GUMMER has settled into its pleasant stride. First came
the 500-Mile Race, next the Royalton Steeplechase and in July the Western Tennis Championships at Woodstock,
usually a biennial affair. The Steeplechase yesterday sees us two-thirds of the way, Part of its charm is that it stays to its pattern. We have some new riders and horses each year but the enthusiasts know what to expect and go because they like what they | find and the opportunity to see everyone in a leisurely way.
We lunched with the Cornelius Aligs at Huntsend before and dropped into the cocktail party at the Hunt House afterward. Woodstock had a big crowd for the dance last night and the Steeplechase dinner at Highland Friday night was great fun,

WEDDINGS LOOM large on the calendar all of this month. Dolores and Charles Pickerell are on a brief honeymoon after their marriage Wednesday morning. They will live in the bride's family’s house this summer while her parents, Dr. and Mrs. George Garceau are in Europe. Zee and Norman Metzger are back from their foreign jaunt, Charles Latham, who spent ‘about five months abroad. Mr. and Mrs, Earl Barnes and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Kuhn are among the recently returned
' European travelers.
The Barnes’ were at Ceci’'s and Bill Griffith's wedding reception where Mrs. Barnes wore a sheer nayy dress and, enormous navy: hat that was most becoming. Hot as it was, the wedding party managed to look remarkably cool. Marjorie Kroeger caught Ceci’s bouquet when she threw it from the balcony as brides at Woodstock have been doing for many years.

THE CLUB WARS transformed into a garden that day. The fireplace in the Green Room was a garden wall ‘with a pink
canopy extending over the table in front of it. One punch table was cres-eent-shaped, covered with a pale blue satin cloth, the edge outlined with halves of fresh pineapples filled with flowers, On a table on the west porch, red roses, dark blue delphinium and pink peonies were frozen in big blocks of ice with a bowl, sunk in ice, at its base. Everywhere one looked there were unusual and charming flower arrangements. It was good to see Mrs. William C, Bobbs at the reception, about again after her serious fliness. She was wearing a figured beige organdie dress with brands of plain beige organdie
set in the skirt and a pale hat. ” ” »
WOODSTOCK was quite a contrast to the Coliseum and the Republican State Convention. Several guests who had spent the day there, slipped back after the reception to be on hand at the crucial moment and don one of the Craig buttons that appeared in enormous quantities at the moment the result of the final ballot was announced. While the bride is always the center of attraction and Joan Hoster DeVoe was no exception at the festivities preceding her marriage Wednesday, Dick Kazmaler, one of Chuck's ushers, created quite a stir when he played tennis at Woodstock the day he arrived. = ” » JANE HOME. has returned to Rome, Ga., after a visit with her husband’s parents, Mr, and
Mrs, George Home. While she
was here Mrs.” Home had a ‘luncheon for Jane and Barbara ‘ Walker ih Woodstock. Mrs. George Hume, formerly
.of Indianapolis, was in town for
a few days recently on-her yay home to Pasadena after a fivemonth cruise on the “Coronia” which took her to many fascinating ports and countries.
