Sermon of the Week—

‘Power of Gospel’

Scripture: “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of - God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.” Romans 1:16,

WHAT IS the Gospel of Christ? It is not a social Gospel.

Tt is not a Gospel of good works. We find what the Gospel is In I Corinthians 15:1-4, “Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel ... how that Christ died for our sins “+ +» +» and that he was buried, and that he arose again the third day for our sins according ‘to the scriptures.” This is the only Gospel that saves from sin, It is the power of God unto salvation. Salvation is in three tenses: Past, present and future. Past: Saved from the penalty of sin. Present: Saved from the power and dominion of sin. Future: Saved from the very presence of sin. The Gospel is the power of God unto salvation in all of these phases. . #* - MANY OF YOU will, no doubt, remember reading the account of the young man, Mr. Al Johnson of Topeka, Kas, who confessed that he robbed the Hoyt State Bank in Hoyt, Kas. Due to a mistake of identification, he would never have been apprehended by law. He made his confession because he was converted. Mr. Johnson was converted through reading one of our gospel tracts, “God's Simple Plan of Salvation,” which someone sent him through the mail. It was not the tract that converted him; it was the Gospel, impowered by the Holy Spirit, that is in the tract, God said,

~ “It is the power (or dynamite)

of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; , . .” Through reading the tract, Mr. Johnson became convicted that he had sinned and was a

sinner by nature, and he believed the Gospel and was converted. He was now saved from the penalty of sin; that is, eternal death, -He tried for some time to keep the bank robbery to himself, but he said that day after day he became so ‘deeply convicted that he would have lost his mind if he had not confessed. The reason he did not want to make a clean con-

fession is because of the power of sin. ® ®'®n BUT GOD said the Gospel “is the power of God unto salvation. . . .” Not only to save from the penalty of sin, but also from sin’s power, He made a clean confession, borrowed the money and paid the bank in full for his part. Why did he do it? Because of the power of the Gospel. Now God has promisd him that some day he shall be saved from the very presence of sin.

Mr. Johnson wrote, “I thank |

God that I have hot only made things right with Him, but I

have also made .things right with man and, in so doing, I have perfect peace with Him.” It was my privilege to wsit Mr. Johnson and his family in Topeka a few days ago. They have a lovely, yet modest, but best of all now a Christian home. I join with the Apostle Paul in saying, “I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ: For it is the power of God . . .” to transform lives and also homes.
