Blackwood on Bridge—

Daring Lead May Pay oH

In ‘Emergency’

OMETIMES, when a player like Mr. Masters makes an amazing-looking defensive play like leading directly into a 10ace holding in dummy, a casual player like Mr, New, the avid kibitzer, might consider him to be a wizard, capable of seeing through the backs of the cards. Such is not the case. Mr. Masters makes a play like this after a careful consideration of the bidding, t h e opening lead, the looks of the dummy and the play to previous tricks. The time element is usually of the utmost importance in these situations. Mr. Masters’ thought is that if his daring lead does not defeat the contract, then it cannot be defeated. *

5 » 5 MR. ABEI; had an opportunity to make a fine defensive play in today's deal, but he

muffed it. Mr. Meek opened the deuce of hearts, the four was played from the board and Mr. Abel won with the 10. Without: much thought he returned the king of hearts. This seemed to be a “safe” lead and it was— as far as the heart suit itself was concerned. It was far from safe, though, considering the hand as a whole, because it gave Mr. Dale time to make his contract. Mr. Dale ruffed the second heart, took two rounds of trumps, ending in dummy, and returned the nine of diamonds. This was ducked around and Mr. Meek won with the king. He led back a spade, but it was

too late. Dummy’s ace was put

up and Mr, Dale got rid of the other two spades on the board by discarding them on his long diamond suit. He then ruffed his losing spade in dummy and spread the hand. ~ ~ » MR. ABEL SHOULD have returned a small spade at trick two. It was clear that Mr. Meek had four hearts and therefore Mr, Dale had only one. Further, Mr. Dale could be figured for at least 10 cards in the minor suits. If thé defenders had a spade winner at all it had to be set up before Mr. Dale established his diamond suit. If Mr. Dale had the king and one spade, the contract could not be beaten anyway, so actually Mr. Abel had practically nothing to lose by attacking spades. Safe leads are very commendable but theyre no good in “emergencies” like this,

PAPER DUCKS THAT FLOAT

PUNCH BE dou wel -~ DIPOW of PARAFFIN

TRY IT

Here is a way that. you can make little paper floating ducks. You know that ordinarily any time you put paper in water it soaks the water up and sinks. Well, this secret is in the coat of paraffin which waterproofs the paper. Heating paraffin can be dangerous, so let Mother do this part for you. A low heat will melt a third cup of paraffin without burning it. NEVER CARRY HOT

dipping,” too. Sketch the duck, about two or three inches long, on

allowing an inch to an inch and a half for folding the base as shown. Paste the base, then color the duck with crayons or oil paint. Dip it into the warm paraffin with a wire punched through the eye. When it is dry, watch it float. It’s magic. TOMORROW-—A Milk Carton Sion Play Specdometel. | Speedometer.
