OMETIMES it is unfortunate to have a completely “safe” lead in your hand. Since that lead cannot possibly lose a trick and since partner cannot (you think) criticize it, there is a strong temptation to make it without thinking of the advantages of another and more hazard0 u 8s - looking lead. In today’s deal Mr. Abel got into a reaonable and apparently makeable contract of four spades. It looks like he has to lose only a diamond, a heart and a club. And that's all he did lose. But he would have lost one more trick if Mr. Muzzy had not been lulled by the siren of safety. » » »

MR. DALE opened the king of diamonds and continued with

the ace when his partner flashed the eight spot. Mr. Abel ruffed the second lead and led the queen of clubs, ducking in dummy. Mr. Muzzy won with the king.

He returned the queen of hearts and Mr. Abel won and promptly ran off ten tricks. A diamond return would have ruined Mr. Abel's chances, And the lead stands out.

It was extremely unlikely that Mr. Dale had the ace of hearts. He had already shown

Boys and girls of all ages enjoy being “Indians” if they can have costumes and make much of their equipment such as tomtoms, rattles, headdresses, and weapons. Joan Lea Keener of Amherst, Wisconsin, sent this way of making al fringed jacket for small fry. She suggests using a large paper bag, the kind used to bring groceries home from the store, and cutting out a! hole in the bottom of the bag for the neck hole. The arm holes are cut in the sides of the bag by cutting | a U-shaped cut and then fringing the cutout section from the bottom up. This makes the shoulder fringe. Now, cut the jacket. Make Indian designs or borders in bright colors, | and tie the front together with a shoe string. Use crayons or paint for the design.
