Ingenuity Saves Space in Garage Hom

.By JEAN SPICKLEMIRE Times Homes Editor’

ECIPE FOR INEXPENSIVE -REFURBISHING: Gallons of paint plus a surplus of ingenuity. That's the successful formula used to decorate the garage home of Russell Foster, 4122 N. Meridian St,

Begun when he was on a “very skinny budget,” Mr. Foster started with space and

a kitchen sink. To make the rooms ‘give’ as much as possible, he built book shelves

around the doors, used a double tiered arrangement in his clothes closet, turned a kitchen cupboard into a “trundle” bed.

Beneath the bed is a roomy spot for storage and above its foot, hidden by a regular | window blind painted the color of the closet interior, is additional space. The peony color provides a bright spot when the door is open, contrasts smartly with the shocking pink kitchen walls. n ” ” . THE PINK is spread over the culinary built-ins, which store the remainder of the kitchen gear. It touches, too, the drop leaf table which will seat six, The latter is unique in that it was constructed of plywood and 2x2's, occupies a minimum of space. Stools of the same color are hidden beneath the table,

On the floor is sunny yellow linoleum, a yellow shag rug. Kitchen curtains tie the entire room together. They're brisbrise style, the bottom row red, the top one a floral pattern that combines the red, pink and yellow. White stove and tion relieve all the color. Clever gimmicks in the area are color pictures of food above the drainboard lacquered so they can be wiped off and a display of fruit plates that continues around two walls,

THE INDIANAPOLIS TIMES

e Homemaking May 17 Wedding Announced

Time Is Valuable

F YOU don’t value your homemaking time, no one else will. Because so many housewives complain that intrusions steal important minutes from the homemaking day, here is a

; list of tips to make it more compact: ONE: Make a daily schedule and stick to it. TWO: Avoid long, chatty phone calls. Your friend at the

other end of the line may have plenty of time, and can afford to talk, but you can’t. THREE: Inefficient home equipment wastes time. It's wise to invest in surfaces, especially in the kitchen and bathroom which require only seconds of light wiping, not hours of scrubbing. FOUR: Keep appliances In good repair, and give them regular checkups. A lazy washer, or a vacuum cleaner with inadequate suction, can rob your day of precious minutes. FIVE: supplies «nly once a week, and make a jist in advance. SIX: Restrict social and charitable activities to “light” days, when there is no laundry, shopping, general cleaning, or trips to the dren. i SEVEN: You can save minutes every day by allowing dishes to air-dry after scalding on a heat-resistant drainboard,

instead of wiping them with a |

towel, EIGHT: Try working with a cart on wheels which moves housekeeping aids

work area to another. This

saves literally miles of walk- |

ing and hours of time in a year.
