Charges of ‘Smear’ Fly in South Dakota
PIERRE, §. D., May 31 (UP)— South Dakota's primary election next Tuesday, enlivened by the most bitter fight to date between supporters of Sen. Robert A. Taft (R. 0.) and Gen. Dwight Eisenhower, is expected to draw a record vote. Supporters of both the candidates for the Republican presidential nomination predicted a close race with heavy balloting. Former Gov. George T. Mickelson, leader of the. Eisenhower forces, said. he felt “sure” “the General Would win the state's 14 delegates, Mr, Taft said earlier during a stumping tour of the state that he expects to win. Berryman. 8. Hurley, secretary of the 1951 Indiana State Senate, was elected chairman. He -received a majority of the votes cast, although he took only six of the 13 states participating in the annual Young GOP convention,
Two of the other three officers elected by the strife-torn convention also were pro-Taft, Sara Lou Mather, young Republican’ National Committeewoman from Minnesota and an active Eisenhower supporter, charged the convention with “high pressuring” delegates.
Several delegates expressed bitterness when the convention went on record favoring a resolution that the GOP presidential nominee be: a candidate who “owes no legal or moral debt to the present administration.” The resolution was considered anti-Eisenhower.
But, a proposal that the convention specifically indorse the candidacy of Sen. Taft was tabled. - ¥

He said he came here to “preach.” ONE: Democrats have been in power too long. TWO: If the GOP can't win this year, the Republican Party is in great danger of losing its identity. He criticized the President's handling of the Korean Was and the “Cold War.” “If Sens Taft is elected,” the general commented, “he'd be forced to follow Gen. Eisenhower’s foreign policy. A united and strong Europe is in our interests, let's not make any mistake about it.” Dressed in a grey business suit, Gen, Donovan looked like a lawyer or businessman. He is both now, He concluded his press interview, predicting Gen. Eisenhower would be nominated and elected,
