Four young Mormons now are doing missionary work in Indianapolis at their own expense.

They hail from difféfent

experiences, : They are following the custom

of the Church of Jesus Christ of

Latter Day Saints by giving two years of their lives exclusively on a volunteer basis, to spreading Mormon teachings, ; oy Like all members of their church, they abstain from the use of to , alcoholic beverages, coffee and tea. They have no “dates” during the two years because “it might lead to falling in love, to marriage and diversion from the special purpose.”

Dancing Allowed

The church ordinarily does not discourage dancing for members, “under proper conditions.” But| missionaries do not dance. | One carefully explained that Mormons do not keep such rules because they are peculiar people but because they wish to avoid anything that will divert them from their duties. Perhaps a pair of the missionaries has rung your doorbell. They go about the city by twos doing a great deal of house-to-house calling. In this way they present the faith to persons who indicate an interest in it. They inform . their hearers that there are two Mormon chapels here— at 15th and N, New Jersey Sts, and at 1080 Villa Ave. on the South Side. They grant private interviews to persons who wish to ask questions or talk over the faith of Latter Day Saints. The missionaries may perform marriages, give Holy Communion, administer baptism and all other ordinances of the church, -

Deacons at 12

All young Mormons are made deacons the age of 12 if they can qualify, teachers at 15 and elders at 19. They can advance further if they apply themselves. When they are only 5 years old they begin training in public speaking so they soon can talk with poise before an audience. The church furnishes all its members with duties and respon‘sibilities which increase as the years pass. No paid pastors fill its pulpits. Every bit of work is donated except for the: services

of a very few executive officers|

of the general church. Indianapolis is located in the Great Lakes Mission which includes this state, Michigan and Ohio. The four mentioned missionaries are working entirely in this mission and are being directed by its president.

Many Converts

The young men report that they make several converts each month. They write home each week “so that their families can share in the pleasure of what they are doing.” The four missionaries, all entitled to be called “elder,” are: George K. Worthen, 23, Las Vegas, Nev.; John Ray Greaves, 20, Preston, Ida..; J. Evan Bean, 21, Provo, Utah, and LeRay Hallsted, 21, Safford, Ariz. Mr. Worthen, a great grandchild of early Morman pioneers, helped his father build a “four plex” house to earn money to finance his misisonary term. Like all his associates, he also receives help from home He plans to go into masonry construction when he returns to Nevada.

Mr. Greaves recalled a bit wistfully that he sold a very good car, to increase his expense
